What the OZEV Grant Covers
According to gov.uk, the EV Chargepoint Grant provides up to £350 (including VAT) towards the cost of purchasing and installing a home EV charger. The grant is applied directly by your OZEV-approved installer, meaning you simply pay the reduced price.
The scheme replaced the original Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) in April 2022. The key change was that homeowners living in houses with driveways were removed from eligibility, as the government considered the home charging market mature enough for this group.
According to OZEV, the grant can only be used with an approved charger installed by an OZEV-approved installer. You cannot claim the grant retrospectively for a charger you have already installed.
Who Is Eligible?
Eligible
- Renters — tenants in rented accommodation with landlord permission and off-street parking
- Flat owners — leaseholders and owner-occupiers of flats with dedicated parking
- Landlords — installing chargers for tenants (separate landlord strand of the grant)
- Must own or have ordered an eligible EV or plug-in hybrid
Not Eligible
- Homeowners with houses — if you own a house with a driveway, you have not been eligible since April 2022
- No off-street parking — you must have a dedicated parking space to install a charger
- Retrospective claims — you cannot claim back for a charger already installed without prior approval
- Non-OZEV installers — the charger must be installed by an OZEV-approved installer
Honest Assessment
The majority of homeowners in the UK live in houses with driveways and therefore no longer qualify for this grant. If you are a homeowner in a house, you will need to fund the full installation cost yourself — typically £800-£1,500 according to industry data. The grant remains valuable for renters and flat owners, where installation can be more complex and costly.
